Qube Gallery hosts an annual Qube Open Art Competition. This increasingly popular event attracts artists from across the country, with entries reflecting a set theme. Anyone is eligible to enter and works can be of any medium, 2D, 3D or digital. A £500 cash prize is awarded to the winning artist, decided by an independent panel of judges. There’s also a People’s Choice prize, decided by the viewing public, where the winner will receive their own exhibition in 2021. The theme for 2020 was ‘Reflections’.

The gallery exhibition has now come to an end and we can now reveal the winners of both prizes. The online exhibition is still available to view online here…

Best in Show

The Best in Show prize has been judged by two independent creative practitioners. We are very grateful to them for helping with what is an incredibly challenging task.

The four Highly Commended artists that the judges wanted to give a special mention to were:

Ros Hornbuckle with Rock Reflections 2
The judges commented: “Unusual approach to a traditional subject. Great use of earthy colours, traditional without being ‘twee'”.

Stephen Terry with Bridge Reflections
The judges commented: “Attention to detail, delicate, painting with paper technique”

Ruth Carlile Mills with Specular Light
The judges commented: “Expression is interesting, interesting painting techniques, you can see the work from different points of view.

Monica Perez Vega with Skirting Twilight
The judges commented: “Vibrant colours, bold, stong, striking, decay verses new bright paint”

The winner of the Best in Show prize this year is:

Michele Coxon with My Stay at Home Comfort Blanket
The judges commented that is “well put together, considered, accessible and an uplifting take on the topic. Great use of British fabrics and identity”.

Congratulations to Michele who has won £500
