Emma Aldridge

My prints explore the tender and mischievous relationship I have with the world I inhabit. I seek the character of my subjects which are drawn straight from nature and where birds feature frequently.

Most often I use screen printing to portray my affection for my present pre-occupations.

The discipline allows me to use minimal planning to patiently build my images with layer after layer of impulsive marks created by cut and torn paper stencils which create in themselves marks and spaces as the ink soaks into the paper. Each layer informs the next layer, my colours are intuitive and I register softly to create sensations of movement and fragility in the story I am telling.

I use photographic stencils frugally to create a step in the process. No image is entirely the same in any of the small editions I produce; they all have their own character.
