Joseph Schneider

As much as painting and drawing are central, I see my work as multi-disciplinary – writing, design, bookworks, textiles, architecture, site-specific interventions and installation, sculpture, performance, photography, sound, film and social practice – create a kind of expanded field and open a way to relativize painting and be critical about its history and its status. Seeing it as a language among many, visual, verbal or whatever, through which we construct our sense of reality.

I am currently developing a project called ORBIT, researching ideas of landscape, the natural and the rural. Some of the work in Orbit will be more documentary in nature, portraying actual places and people but alongside this body of work another will evolve, a collection of imagined artefacts and spaces, where strange objects and figures play out the repressed nature of the rural. In connection with this I have initiated the Rural Art Hub, located near Ellesmere, bringing all ages together in an innovative, inclusive space to experience the radical potential of creative processes and participatory art practice.
