I am a largely self-taught artist. I have always painted and drawn; never a day goes by without my producing something. I am vice-chair of, and a regular demonstrator with, Wrexham Art Group.
Since retiring, I have been actively involved in delivering workshops to various local groups. I started a charity art gallery (tWIG) a few years ago and as a part of that I provided weekly drop-in workshops as well as more structured courses and day workshops, delivered both by myself and visiting artists. The Covid Lockdowns closed the gallery in 2020 and I relinquished the reins that April and concentrated on working from home, where, in addition to my personal work, I provide regular zoom sessions and run a WhatsApp group for local [and not so local] artists. My role in this is as mentor and tutor to artists ranging from beginner to highly experienced. I also make fairly regular YouTube videos and have a Patreon channel.
My favourite medium is oil and I have been using it on-and-off for well over half a century, since I was 14. In 2019, I was an Oil Ambassador for the SAA, of which I am a Professional Associate. Having said this, I also work in watercolour, tending towards a loose Ron Ranson style, and am a great follower of Charles Evans. Much of my recent work has been in acrylic. Many years ago, I worked with Stanley Nowell who introduced me to Gouache as a fine art medium, and I have a great fondness for this much undervalued medium; I love its flexibility and vibrancy, especially in seascape, and am working on developing my own style. I also work in pastel and pastel pencil, producing portraits of both pets and people, and enjoy creating pastel landscapes using Conte as opposed to soft pastel. In addition to this, I work in line and wash, ink, coloured pencil, graphite and charcoal; something of a Jack of all trades, really!
