Lesley Gardiner-Jones

About

Lesley Gardiner-Jones, originally from the South West of England, is a local artist. She has lived and worked in North Wales throughout her initial training and career as a teacher. During that time she was offered a year’s Secondment from her post as a Primary School Teacher to undergo further training. She enrolled on a Master’s degree course at Bangor University for “Teachers of Children with Special Needs”, followed by an intensive course with the British Dyslexia Society. It was during her subsequent work with such children that she began to use art as a medium for supporting and improving her pupil’s basic skills in literacy, realising that the success and enjoyment the children experienced through this method of teaching not only improved their learning but also gave them a renewed confidence and sense of self-worth. In this respect, she saw art as a great leveler and equaliser.

Following her retirement in 2005, she took up painting as a serious hobby and joined several art societies and local groups. Lesley has exhibited her work at many local venues and continues to paint every day in her own studio in the beautiful rural village of Bwlchgwyn, reputedly ‘the highest village in Wales’. Her inspiration is drawn from mainly the breathtaking scenery and the diverse flora and fauna of the local area. Her preferred medium is watercolour, although she also uses pastels, conte crayon, Indian and acrylic inks for some pieces and is particularly fond of the Line and Wash technique.

She is happiest when working in her studio or joining a group of like-minded artists for a chance to practice, improve upon and extend her own skills. Her philosophy is that “there is always something interesting and beautiful to see in the natural world around us, one just needs to really look closely and observe every little detail”.
