I explore texture and tone in clay. combining white stoneware clays with black vulcan heavily grogged clays in the same piece. I rarely glaze the external surface of clay preferring the natural matt finish. All pieces are fired twice, the second higher temperature firing bringing out the different textures and colours of the clay bodies.
I am inspired by organic shapes found in nature – in plants and in the folds and lines of the landscape. Sketchbook work from both imagination and from real life informs the pieces I make. All my ceramics are hand built and I form them very instinctively – responding to the clay as I work it.
