In 2020 Qube launched a new creative social group for women in Oswestry and North Shropshire thanks to funding support from the Tampon Tax Community Fund, run by The Community Foundation for Staffordshire. The yearlong project called ‘Work in Progress’ offered two free monthly meetups at Qube for women, over the age of 18, who wanted to take some time out, be creative and make new friends, in a safe non-judgmental space.
The sessions were overseen by the wonderful Gemma Manning, a well-established jewellery designer/maker and owner of Gemmipop Designs based in Oswestry.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Work in Progress project had to be temporarily suspended. However, Gemma and the group kept in touch throughout the lockdowns by sharing their work and inspiration online on Instagram and Facebook.
In June 2021, when it was safe to reopen, an exhibition and artist in residency was held at Qube. Gemma was on hand everyday, offering inspiration, encouragement and a friendly ear to anyone who wanted to come in and be creative.
The exhibition invited any woman to bring in something they’re working on, whether finished or not, to put on display to inspire others. The work ranged from crochet, knitting and tapestry to drawing, photography and papercraft. On this page you can see some of the works that were on display.
