Coram Voice is looking to recruit local adults to become volunteer Independent Visitors for a child or young person who is a 'Looked After Child' in Shropshire.
Independent Visitors are volunteers who befriend and spend time with a child or young person who is in Local Authority care. Activities vary depending on their interests and the age of the young person. This can range from going for a coffee and chat, window-shopping, occasional cinema trips and taking part in sporting activities such as badminton and golf.
An Independent Visitor or IV is a reliable, consistent and independent friend who visits a looked after child or young person who is isolated, and has limited, or no, family contact. They provide a good, stable, adult role model for the young person, befriending and listening to the young person, on an open-ended basis for as long as both parties want it to continue. The idea is that an Independent Visitor is a constant in a child/young persons life even when other things like their Social Worker or placement might change.
Coram Voice asks that volunteers are able to make a commitment to visit/meet up with their child/young person a minimum of once a month over a period of at least 2 years. Times are flexible, visits will often take place at weekends, but are arranged by the volunteer and the young person to suit.
Volunteers must be over 18 and are welcome from all backgrounds. Full training and ongoing support will be given, and out of pocket expenses paid for mileage and activities. Volunteers will be subject to enhanced police checks.
Independent Visitors need to be good at listening, patient, interested in supporting a child or young person, willing to find things to do that you both enjoy so sometimes trying out something you may not have done before. Being reliable and trustworthy and willing to learn are also essential.
