Oswestry Community Action (Qube) set to introduce Art Box project with the support of the High Sheriff’s Fund 2025

Oswestry Community Action (Qube) is delighted to have been awarded a grant from the High Sheriff’s Fund 2025, administered by Shropshire Community Foundation.

Oswestry Community Action will use the funds to set up the ‘Art Box’ project, where they will collaborate with local artists to encourage young people in rural communities to engage in the arts, helping them express themselves and improve mental health and wellbeing, and provide a focus that is away from slipping into criminal behaviour.

This series of six free courses will explore art and craft techniques, culminating in a public exhibition. The courses will include making a sketchbook using natural materials; exploring inks, collage, mark making and texture.

By engaging in these workshops, we can improve mental health and emotional resilience in young people. Art is particularly effective in aiding decision-making and reducing stress, and can help young people process challenging emotions and foster positive feelings.

Art Box intends to reduce loneliness, social and rural isolation in young people. We will help young people to express themselves, improving their mental and physical well-being, and build their confidence by providing a safe and welcoming space that encourages communication and the sharing of feelings. By providing a focus, we will show young people there is an alternative to crime and that they can make good life choices.

Arts & Creativity Officer, Gemma Manning-Bentley says, ‘Art can have a positive effect on mental wellbeing, by providing this opportunity to young people that may not have previously had access to a creative environment, we hope we can help shape their future for the better.’
