Brief Duties Of Post:

To work under the direction of the Centre Manager and alongside the Centre’s Maintenance Caretaker. You will be helping to make the Onny meadows a vibrant, clean and safe place for our visitors to enjoy as well as ensuring we maintain the area for the benefit of wildlife.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities:

You will not be expected to be able carry out all of the duties listed below

1. To assist, as directed by the Centre’s Maintenance Caretaker, with the maintenance of the Onny Meadows and surrounding outside space of the Centre.

2. To work within the team and communicate effectively between departments.

3. To assist visitors when necessary with information on the Centre and surrounding areas.

4. You will be a true advocate of Grow Cook Learn, the Discovery Centre, and the Shropshire Hills; with the ability to absorb information and communicate this in a positive and engaging way.

5. You will maintain a high standard of personal presentation, appropriate communication and conduct when dealing with members of the public and clients.

6. To report on accidents, near misses and hazards around the Centre and meadows.

7. To regularly inspect play equipment, fencing, paths and gates for faults or hazards.

8. To assist in maintaining the tidiness and cleanliness of the outside areas, to include checking and clearing dog mess and litter.

9. To assist with checking the GPS trails and equipment for geocaching.

10. To assist in repair work around the Centre and Meadows as requested in accordance with your skill level.

11. Assist in the maintenance required for the sites “hotspot” species habitats.

12. Assist in controlling weeds and grass levels.

The volunteer will be expected to become involved in a range of work to enable the outdoor team to respond effectively to the requirements of Grow Cook Learn.

What You Will Learn:

1. Gardening, including planting and maintaining plants.

2. All about the wildlife we have in the meadow: its birds, plants, insects and trees.

3. To coppice and pollard trees and why this is important.

4. To maintain and lay hedges.

5. To act as an ambassador for Grow Cook Learn at all times during the course of your duties. 

6. Uphold the Equalities and Diversity policy of the Group and be fully committed to the principles of Equality and Diversity in the work place, whilst carrying out tasks and responsibilities, avoiding unlawful discrimination in employment and against customers. 

7. To take responsibility for the health and safety of oneself and others in the workplace working in accordance with the Grow Cook Learn Health and Safety Policy, Fire Safety and Risk Management policies, procedures and Financial Regulations along with all other legislation, British Standards and regulations associated with the role, particularly in respect of:

  • Accident Reporting
  • Lone Working procedures
  • Risk Management

What skills do I need?

Essential: 

You will have an interest in the outdoors and a passion for conservation and wildlife.

You will be comfortable using basic gardening tools such as lawn mowers, trimmers and shovels.

Desirable:

You will have an understanding of the local landscape and its history.

You will have experience in gardening and/or land farming
