Opportunity
Nature Recovery Networks link existing areas of good wildlife habitat via a series of stepping stones - land managed for the benefit of wildlife, whether as hedges, flower-rich grassland or wetland, whatever is appropriate. Restoring connections will give plants and animals freedom to move from place to place, helping them to adapt to change.
To achieve this, it is vital that we have a comprehensive habitat map to help us identify opportunity areas for habitat restoration and creation.
As a habitat mapping volunteer, you will:
- Explore your local area through group walks
- Conduct on-the-ground surveys in your local area
- Collect habitat data to inform our conservation work
Volunteers work in small teams, often combining survey activity with a walk, normally over the
summer months. This might involve walking over rough, muddy or uneven ground.
We’ll ask you to read and adhere to our safeguarding policy, health and safety policy, and our volunteer code of conduct. You’ll receive a copy of these when you apply. At Shropshire Wildlife Trust, we’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive team where everyone is welcome. If you’re worried you don’t have quite the right skills, might not be able to participate in all activities, or need any support or adjustments to the role, have a chat with us and we’ll do everything we can to help you volunteer.
What skills do I need?
No prior experience is required for this role, and training on habitat identification and survey techniques will be provided.
We are looking for people who:
- Have a passion for nature, wildlife and their local area
- Are reliable and committed
- Any experience you have in habitat and species identification, or any knowledge of your local
area, would be very helpful, but is not essential.
