This is an exciting opportunity to join a newly established team of volunteers dedicated to revitalising and developing the Shropshire Wildlife Trust walled garden, set within the historic grounds of Shrewsbury Abbey in Shrewsbury.
Currently a blank canvas with significant potential, the garden presents you a rare opportunity to shape its vision from the outset. You will have genuine scope to influence its direction, create a thriving and inspiring space for staff, and leave a lasting legacy within this unique and historic setting.
Volunteers are essential in helping us to look after the heritage and wildlife gardens at Shropshire Wildlife Trust Headquarters, maintaining the space to inspire others, providing a beautiful, tranquil space for staff and others to enjoy.
As a walled garden volunteer, you will:
- make your own mark on the garden, shaping its development and future direction.
- enjoy creative freedom to contribute ideas and help bring new initiatives to life.
- make a meaningful impact by transforming the space into a thriving and inspiring
environment.
- work within a small, friendly team to maintain and enhance the garden, ensuring it remains
safe, welcoming, and accessible for staff.
The garden is fully accessible with level, wide paths and raised beds. Accessible toilet facilities are
available in the visitor centre, next to the garden.
We are looking for people who:
- Have an interest in historic or wildlife gardens.
- Have experience in gardening, horticulture or garden design.
- Are comfortable with physically engaging duties
- Are happy to carry out a variety of tasks, working outside individually and/or as part of a
team
- Are reliable and punctual.
Initially, we’ll ask you to come along for a trial period of one month. We’ll ask you to read and
adhere to our safeguarding policy, health and safety policy, and our volunteer code of conduct.
You’ll receive a copy of these when you apply.
At Shropshire Wildlife Trust, we’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive team where
everyone is welcome. If you’re worried you don’t have quite the right skills, might not be able to
participate in all activities, or need any support or adjustments to the role, have a chat with us and
we’ll do everything we can to help you volunteer.
