A little bit about Leila
My name is Leila Hodgson and I am a ceramic and mixed-media artist. I live on the Shropshire and Welsh border, just outside of Oswestry. I grew up in the area, enjoying the beautiful rural setting and nature which are both a big influence on my work.
Tell us about your art and inspiration
I have just completed my three-year Applied Art Degree at Wrexham Glyndŵr University. During the course, I realised that ceramic & metal were the materials I particularly liked working with. Surface textures and bright colours are something I am very drawn to and this is translated in my work. My degree show work was inspired by looking closely at nature, particularly beetles. The colours and textures seen on beetles is amazing and this mixed with folk art and abstract forms & textures was the influence behind the pieces I have made. I have also produced a range of glazed ceramic beetle inspired necklaces.
What’s you favourite medium to work with?
I love that clay is a very versatile material and the possibilities of what you can create with it are endless. I am also involved with running childrens workshops using clay & the work they produce always amazes me as every piece is so different.
