Our Care and Share dementia support groups are a warm and welcoming place to socialise and make new friends for people with mild to moderate dementia and their family carers. We offer both the carer and family member with dementia a stimulating and varied programme of activity including reminiscence, quizzes, crafts and guest speakers.  

 

The Care and Share Group volunteer role will be to work alongside our Community Resource Session Facilitator in helping the dementia support group members feel welcomed, comfortable, and able to participate in the activities.  

 

Days/times/venue details for volunteer information:

Albrighton - The group is on the 1st & 3rd Friday of the month between 12.30pm and 3.30pm at Albrighton Methodist Church Hall, High Street, Albrighton, WV7 3JA.

Market Drayton – The group is on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month between 12.30pm and 3.30pm at Charter Court, Smithfield Road, Market Drayton, TF9 1RT.

Shrewsbury – The group is on the 2nd & 4th Friday of the month between 12.30pm and 3.30pm at St Peter's Church Hall, Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, SY2 5AP.

The volunteer in any group would be needed to assist from 12pm – 4pm on the day the group runs.

 

Tasks and responsibilities may include any of the following:

·       Talking and listening to people with memory loss/dementia and their family carers in a sensitive and supportive way  

·       Ensuring the room is ready for the group meeting and clearing away after it finishes 

·       Providing support and encouraging people to share their experiences for the benefit of themselves and/or the wider group, as appropriate  

·       Assisting with the serving of refreshments

·       Supporting the carer and person with dementia in engaging with the social activities (for example, board games, arts and crafts etc.)  

 

Additional Responsibilities:

·       Learn about, and follow, Community Resource health and safety standards at all times (including food hygiene where relevant)  

·       Attend any learning and development activities relevant to the role  

·       Report any concerns about safeguarding or other needs you observe to our Session Facilitator as appropriate  

·       Be aware of Community Resource policies and procedures, such as data protection / confidentiality, equal opportunities/inclusion, and code of conduct.

What skills do I need?

Skills:

No special qualifications or experience needed. The role may be ideal for you if you are:  

•  Interested in supporting people with mild to moderate memory loss  

•  Knowledgeable, or a willing to learn about, memory loss / dementia and how it can affect individuals, their families, and carers  

•  Good at listening and communicating with people  

•  Able to be calm, patient and caring  

•  Able to show empathy  

•  Punctual and reliable  

•  Able to understand, and commit to, keeping information confidential  

•  Committed to working as part of a team  

•  Committed to attend the required volunteer training and other relevant learning and development workshops.  

 

Training:

  • The volunteer will have an induction, including attendance at our mandatory (online) training – Adult Safeguarding Awareness.
  • All the tasks the volunteer is asked to complete will be explained and the Session Facilitator will be on hand to answer any queries.
  • The volunteer will be supported by the Session Facilitator and Dementia Support Team lead.

Additional information:

·       Volunteers are covered by Aviva Insurance Ltd public liability and personal accident insurance while working with us.

·       Volunteers must be 18 or over. There is no upper age limit.
