Opportunity

The museum has a large range of artefacts within its collection and requires someone for routine maintenance of all artefacts.

Some museum knowledge required.

Interest in museum environmental conditions or conservation of objects from pests and molds and fungus.

Tasks and responsibilities may include any of the following:

    • Understanding the issues around conservation of museum items (training via National Army Museum)

    • Working to improve understanding of items in museum collection including changing displays in the museum.

    • Liaising with Curator on all items and other museum staff as necessary

    • reporting any issues and looking for solutions (where pests present)

    • repairing clothing and objects as necessary (sewing necessary)

Additional Responsibilities:

    • Understand the importance of the groups Health & Safety procedures.

    • Understand the importance of confidentiality & safeguarding vulnerable children/and or adults. 

    • Be aware of the standards set by The Welsh Guards Collection and Park Hall Farm Countryside Experience and the need to work to these standards at all times.

What skills do I need?

  • A keen eye for material condition and enviromental controls for storage of artefacts.
  • Ability to categorise items and build up a simple database of environmental conditions within the museum and its store
  • interest in photgraphic conservation
  • Pest identification
  • mold and fungus identification
  • Team Working skills
  • Problem solving skills

    • A certain degree of physical fitness is needed. 

    • The Data Collection Volunteer works as part of a team. 

    • The Data Collection volunteer should be reliable and arrive to help on the dates and times agreed.


Training:

    • Every volunteer will receive our mandatory training and a health and safety briefing for site working.

    • Every volunteer will have access & be signposted to training which the group feels is appropriate for the role.

    • Every volunteer will be trained in all the tasks they are required to carry out to ensure they have the skills and confidence to fulfil their role.

    • No volunteer will be expected to carry out their duties unsupervised until they are confident and skilled in these duties. 

    • All volunteers will be supported by David Martin (Curator) and their skills and contribution to the group will be reviewed on a regular basis.

Additional information:

    • Volunteers are covered by Welsh Guards Collection public liability and personal accident insurance while working with us.

    • Volunteers have to be 21 or over. There is no upper age limit.

    • Session Volunteers aged 18 or over or who have left school are required to complete a DBS check as they are working with vulnerable adults and children.

Availability Details

Summer hours for Museum Volunteers are 10-5 (variable), and winter hours usually 10-4 for Museum volunteers (mid week Tues/Wed/Thurs tbc). For Store volunteers summer hours are flexible and winter hours, usually Tues/Wed/Thurs (tbc). Off site data entry volunteers under own arrangements for hours. The Curator will oversee all activities.
