The Wellbeing & Care team at Community Resource delivers falls prevention events to over-60s as well as other health awareness events throughout Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin and utilise the support of volunteers to assist on the day of the event.
Role details:
Community Resource’s Wellbeing & Care Team set up and deliver ’Functional Fitness MOT’ and ‘Let’s Talk Falls’ events at venues around the county throughout the year.
Functional Fitness MOT
The MOT events comprise one-to-one fitness tests for attendees, a taster exercise class, and a talk on reducing the risk of falling. The volunteer will assist by helping attendees complete seven simple tasks and recording the outcomes.
After completion of the tests the volunteer will discuss with the attendees what activities they participate in currently and the benefit of keeping physically active and from that discussion and reviewing the test results they will assist the attendees in developing an Action Plan. The volunteer would aim to encourage and motivate the participant to become more active.
Each set of tests can take up to an hour with an attendee. The volunteer would be asked to work with as many attendees as they are able during the duration of the event.
Approximately 6 to 8 weeks after the event, the volunteer will ring the attendees to find out whether they have implemented their action plan and get some feedback from them on the event that they attended.
Let’s Talk Falls (LTFs)
The LTFs events are like the MOTs except they don’t require attendees to complete the seven fitness tasks. The volunteers will help the event lead person in working with attendees to develop their action plan as well as setting out and clearing up the room where the event is held and making sure that attendees have completed the required paperwork.
