Why You’ll Love These Roles

Volunteering with SMTC supporting the stage and technical requirements is a very rewarding experience for many reasons. Passion for the Arts: If you enjoy theatre or have an appreciation for performing arts, working behind the scenes gives you a unique way to contribute to the production of live performances. You’ll get to see the magic come together in a way that the audience doesn’t.

Skill Development: Volunteering in technical roles such as lighting, sound, set building, or stage management can help you develop valuable, transferable skills. These skills can be useful in other professional or creative settings.

Community Engagement: SMTC is a volunteer led endeavour, so being involved allows you to connect with local creatives, actors, directors, and technicians. It’s a way to meet like-minded individuals and make friends, while also contributing to something that enriches the local culture.

Learning Opportunity: If you’re interested in learning more about the technical aspects of theatre, it’s a great way to gain hands-on experience. Whether you're learning how to operate lights and sound equipment or figuring out how to build or move sets, volunteering gives you an opportunity to learn on the job.

Behind-the-Scenes Satisfaction: There’s a unique sense of satisfaction that comes from helping things run smoothly in a production that audiences might take for granted. Whether it's making sure the lighting cues hit at the right moment, ensuring sound is clear, or building/moving a set that transforms the stage, these efforts are integral to the success of a show.

Making a Difference: You can play a key role in ensuring the show goes on, even though you may not be in the spotlight. Your contributions could make the performance more immersive and professional, and help provide the audience with a more enjoyable experience

What skills do I need?

The skills required are role dependant, some require experience in managing a stage or technical training in lighting and sound while others such as stage hands, calls and front of house require minimal experience or training, just a willingness to help and your time.
